Hey everyone, just reminding you all to finish up Understanding Power if you haven't yet done so.

Just in case some people are behind, the discussion post will not be put up until this Sunday. This time, I will finally set a good example, and actually, you know, add to the discussion.

I am the worst mod

I encourage you all to do the same :)
17th-Aug-2010 05:58 pm - Reading Understanding Power

We will now begin reading Understanding Power: the Indispensable Chomsky. The end of the reading period is set as being one month from now--September 17th. A separate post for comments and discussion will be made tomorrow.

Read at your own pace, but make sure to not save it all for the last minute. Reading one chapter every three days seems like it would work out well. :)
If you have anything you'd like to say about Guns, Germs, and Steel, anything at all, this is the place. :)
11th-Aug-2010 12:49 pm - Results/ Bookhunting Post Number Two

Starting now, members should look for Understanding Power on online retailers, in book stores, in libraries, and online.

If you are using a library, note if you can find the book before Tuesday. If you can't find the book in a library, and are opposed to reading an ebook, note so in the comments.

Also note if you have purchased the book.
7th-Aug-2010 03:15 am - A Quick Note
Based on the comments in the previous post, the reading schedules for future book selections will be extended (possibly to a book a month schedule--though this will probably vary with the length of each book).

For now, we are assuming that the next selection will be Understanding Power: The Indispensable Chomsky. If you would like to redo the recommendations and voting post, please note so in the comments.

Given that the schedule for Guns, Germs, and Steel was poor, we will wait until Wednesday to formally begin looking for copies of Understanding Power in libraries/online. If you have anything you want to discuss about Guns, Germs, and Steel, but weren't able to express because of the schedule, know that one more discussion post will be created in a few days time.
5th-Aug-2010 12:06 pm - Um.
Well, since there was only one book mentioned in the last post, I suppose it would be the winner by default.

But that seems kind of...odd.

So,we can go ahead and go with it, or we can redo the recommendations/ voting post, if you guys want.

Also, it's hard not to notice the lack of participation--so if you have any problems with how things are being done that are keeping you from participating, feel free to speak up. I want this community to work out, y'all =)

Edited copypasta ahoy!

The rules are as follows:

(All times PDT)

Until 12:00 pm Thursday, the only comments that should be posted should be a single book recommendation and explanation per member. Use the time to make sure that it is a book that you really, really, want to read.

At 12:01 pm Thursday, each member will be allowed to cast two (2) (dos) votes, one for the two books besides their own that they find particularly interesting. Voting will be open until 12:00 pm Friday.

So there you have it. You all have 36 hours as of posting to make a single recommendation with an explanation, then 24 hours after that to vote for two other books.

If anyone votes before then, the votes will be deleted. Nothing personal, just trying to keep things organized.

Take your time, and have fun =)

Also, if you want to discuss books mentioned in this post, please use the previous post's comments section. (I realize it may be a bit of a hassle, but I want to keep this post as clean as possible).

Post any thoughts you have on our first selection--what you liked/disliked about the book and why, thoughts on Diamond's writing style, points you found especially interesting, what you learned, and so on.

You don't have to respond immediately of course, but please make sure to post a response in the next few days (and if you fell behind on the reading schedule, make sure to ~wrap it up soon ;D ).

I'm currently planning for the next recommendations and voting post to start on 12:01 am Wednesday PST. Of course, if this is troublesome, let me know.

Also, welcome to our few new members =) If any of you are lost, please make sure to go over the previous entries, which should clear some things up.
